How to take the perfect #flatlay

Made famous on Instagram, there is no doubt about the fact that one of the most popular ways to capture the perfect picture is to; ‘hashtag flatlay’.

Before the social media app, the flatlay was most commonly used (in conjunction with stacks) among the fashion and styling world. This created the perfect way to capture an entire outfit for editorials, look books, or pre-planning a big photo-shoot for a magazine.

The style of photography, or should we say ‘iphoneography’ certainly rose to fame once the app became popular as fashion influencers all over the world started uploading snaps of their day to day lives. Then, before we knew it, people all over the world were setting their creative flair free and curating their own versions with things, and people, and food, and pets, and babies, and lollies, and cakes.

You name it, someone has uploaded a #flatlay of it.

So since everybody loves them, we thought a mini guide to nailing the ultimate #flatlay and giving your feed some oompf would be perfect.

What time of day is it? What are you doing right now? Curated, or candid… we can work with anything really.

Grab a few of our favourite things and arrange them. However you like, there is a bit of an art to the flatlay arranging, but it’s the best kind. Go FREESTYLE and be messy, or really neat and line everything up. Or overlap stuff and make one thing the ‘star’. Be creative babe!

It used to be super cool to filter the sh*t out of your photos, but 2017 is loving the el naturel lighting of a bright room. It also accurately captures the colours and brands you might be featuring. Most people can tell that the peachy pink on your lipgloss is most certainly GO-TO… buuuuut why spoil/hide such a fab colour with Nashville, or Gingham when you can use lighting to show off the real deal.

Okay, so to totally contradicting the above – just a little… Using a filter in some instances can certainly make your flatlay look better. If you are taking a snap in a room that’s not well lit, it’s nighttime, you have a ‘theme’ running on your feed, or it just needs a bit of a profesh looking boost. Go ahead and choose an Insta filter! Better yet… there’s apps out there with lots and lots more filters to get your hands on, so do some research and give your pics a touch up for the ultimate upload.

Before you post your masterpiece, it’s gotta have a caption to boot. This is completely up to you – long, short, just an emoji… or like 7 emojis. Whatever it needs. Whatever you’re feeling, you should write. The caption should be your style. Be creative, be fun, be cheeky. And very most importantly, check yo’ spelling!

There you have it. Get snapping, and tag us @thecanberraedit in your Instagram #flatlay for a chance to be featured on our feed!
