Secrets from a makeup artist: The 5 best highlighters

Highlighters are one of the go-to products these days having lived a long life at the bottom of the beauty bag, they’ve quickly become a must-have among all beauty and makeup obsessed. The reason why, highlighters give you an ultra shimmery glow that’ll have onlookers asking who did your face, and questioning why they haven’t used this product yet!

If you’re yet to try a highlighter or looking for a new one to test run, we’ve got 5 of the best from one of our local makeup artists and all-round beauty queen, Merissa Devine of ByDevine.

The Balm – Mary Lou-Manizer – This highlight is my ultimate fave and comes in two different colours, gold and silver. Its pigment is brighter than my future and can be used as an all over body and face highlight. It lasts all night, so even when you’re rolling out of the club at 3am, you’ll still be shining.

M.A.C – Mineralize Skinfinish – Comes in 5 different colours ranging between silver, gold and pinks to match all skin tones. Its lightweight consistency is so easy to apply for a sheer, radiant glow.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfecter in Champagne Pop – you may have heard Jaclyn Hill go ham on this highlighter like it saves her life everyday and i can second that! It’s a creamy dewy highlighter that goes on so silky soft to highlight and accentuate all your golden features.

Elf Blush Baked Highlighter – This dupe is perfect for those who don’t want to break bank but still need a radiant glow. The Elf highlighter comes in the shade ‘moonlight pearl’ and it’s a pinky silver colour perfect for cheekbone highlight. Oh and it’s animal testing free!

Benefit Cosmetics – Sun Beam Highlighter – This highlighter comes in a little tube of highlighting goodness. ‘Sun beam’ is a golden consistency perfect for darker skin tones and there’s also ‘high beam’ in a pinky colour for all skin tones especially light ivory.

When tasked with highlighting our own face, it’s important to know the key spots so that you don’t overdo it. Cue shimmery tin women… not a good look!

Just the inner corners of the eyes, your cupid’s bow, the arch if your brow and the upper cheek line needs attention. They’re the areas you want to ‘highlight’ so it makes sense to pay extra special attention to them and leave the rest of the face to foundation, concealer and blush.

If you want to start looking after your skin and treating yourself to gorgeous makeup and beauty treatments (hello LASHES!!!) for special events, chat to Merissa at ByDevine. She’s all about educating her clients and setting them up for a skin routine that’ll have you posting “I woke up like this’ selfies on the daily!
