The tale of: Megan Cannings

One more sleep until Fashfest 2018! We sat down with designer, Megan Cannings to chat all about her and what we’ll expect from her latest collection…

Congratulations on being chosen to showcase at Fashfest 2018 again this year! What can we expect to see at this years show from Megan Cannings?

I’m excited to be back at FASHFEST. It’s such a pleasure to work with the organisers and the designers get more time on the runway and so many fabulous photos afterwards from the FASHFEST photography team. This year’s collection is feminine—that’s my signature look. I’m showing beautiful gowns—some of my favourites. Together they make a beautiful, colourful story.

How long have you been a fashion designer?

As long as I can remember. I’ve been showing on various runways for five years including, most recently New York Fashion Week. I was also invited to Milan but the timing wasn’t right. I’ll get there.

When did you realise Fashion was your thing?

Since I was a little girl. I’ve been using a sewing machine for years.

We’d love to know more about your experience with Cyclone Debbie and how you’ve managed to rise out of that situation.
Cyclone Debbie tore our house apart and destroyed my sewing machine, sewing
equipment and fabrics—even my favorite pair of scissors. It was a shock and
devastating, but I was determined to start all over again and I did. You just have to
keep carrying on.

Also that you don’t really know how to read patterns? Amazing!

I have been sewing since I was in Grade 6, with my aunty teaching me most of what I
know. I tend to find reading patterns challenging and so design more by intuition. I
just ‘feel’ what will work and go from there.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

My surroundings. My imagination. I always carry a small notebook and a pencil with me. I just pop down images and ideas as soon as they enter my head.

Who inspires you?

I love fashion of all kind. I love so many designers, but Giambattista Valli and Erdem are two of my favs.

What does being a part of Fashfest mean to you?

I love being part of FASHFEST. It feels like home to me … the show is amazing and I’ve always had such wonderful feedback.

What’s next for Megan Cannings?

I’m working on building up the retail side of my business for resort wear, although my gowns will still remain custom made.
