The owner, 26 year old Melanie Gibbs, is a a Children’s event and party planner right here in Canberra. She plans, styles and hosts events of all types and sizes.
We sat down with Mel to ask all of the questions about her new celebrations business and how you can hire her expertise for your childs next event!
Congratulations on the launch of your new business, Tiny Creatures! Tell us a little bit about why you started it?
Thank you!! We are so excited to see it finally come to life!
Well Tiny Creatures started when we noticed a gap in the Canberra Market. I have spent a long time in the dance and drama industry and to be honest I can’t ever imagine not being part of it in some way. There are so many wonderful local businesses and we wanted to offer people a service that could pull all of those businesses together. We love events, styling and planning so what better way to do that than with Kids Parties!
How did you come up with the name?
We love animals (check out the bunny logo) and the concept of adventures and this is really where the name “Tiny Creatures” came from – it’s playful, energetic and a little bit cheeky which is exactly what we wanted to embody.
What kinds of themes and parties can parents book for their children?
We have 3 different kinds of parties we offer as well as our online supply store, our teepee sleepovers which come in some gorgeous themes including “into the woods” and “sweet dreams”. Our traditional parties, which can be matched to any theme, think unicorns, dinosaurs, fairies, rainbows, animals – you name it!
We also offer a hosting package, so for those that want to do all the set-up and styling themselves, but want someone to bring the games and keep the kids entertained.
Our goal was to set-up a company that didn’t put limitations on what we could do, our services are 100% customizable. We meet with each customer to first understand what they are after so we can put together a complete package.
Do you supply catering such as yummy party style nibbles, sweets and birthday cakes?
We don’t supply catering but we do have fantastic relationships with local businesses that offer party nibbles, grazing boards and amazing sweets! I mean, have you seen these amazing grazing tables we have available in
Canberra? Why try to fix what isn’t broken! So instead we offer a coordination service for catering and organise all of this on the customer’s behalf.
What has been the most challenging experience you have faced setting up your own party planning business?
The biggest challenge has been knowing where to start and not getting carried away. The industry is huge and there is so much talent and opportunity it’s hard to not want to try and do everything at once! Building an online store was our second challenge, how do you not stock every adorable party supply in the world? Self control! That is something we have had to learn – and learn really fast!
How far in advance should parents start working with you to prepare for their child’s party?
Generally a couple of months out, especially if you don’t have a lot of flexibility with dates. It gives us time to meet you and make sure we are really nailing the party brief. A lot of our pieces can be customised and that can take some time, as well as coordinating other vendors and making sure we have all the right pieces to bring together the perfect event! In saying that, we have organized events in only a matter of weeks – we aren’t ones to steer away from a challenge.
