When it comes to preparing for a holiday, many fall into three categories: there are those who are Marie-Kondo style methodical packers and can get away with a carry on only with, wearing only the basic essentials and looking fabulous. (insert our enviable eye – roll).
Those who pack reasonably light, but then forget all the essentials and have to make a mad dash to the nearest store because they’ve forgotten swimmers, charger, sunscreen, hats, shoes – pretty much everything.
And then there are those (*cough cough us) who pack for a snowstorm, apocalypse or heat wave all in one, never using nor wearing everything taken and a trip to the chiropractor essential on return for the dragging of the bulging suitcase.
We’ve put together the ultimate checklist in what we think are the must have’s for your next holiday.
Swap stuff with your travel companion
If travelling with others, put some clothes into your companions bag and vice versa. If either of your bags get lost in transit, then at least you have a days outfit whilst you wait and aren’t getting caught out in a remote location with zero options.

Attention Tech Nerds
For all the photos and videos you will take no doubt, you NEED a back up battery pack. Charge it overnight and pop it in your bag for your days out. Check out Macpac for their range.
Google Translate – an amazing app for decoding menus or learning common words and phrases. You can even hold your camera up to a word or sign and the app will instantly translate what it says for you. Genius!
Timeout is a great app also to help you live like a local with city guides and maps and what’s happening whilst you’re there. Download before you leave.
Whoever thought of this, we bow down. Separate all your things into packing cubes. One for shoes, one for swimmers, first aid, clothes for him, clothes for her, clothes for kids, snacks, tech gadgets. One less headache, more time for drinks by the pool!

You Need Options
A girl needs options, right? But be smart. Take pieces that you can wear during the day, but then dress up of a night. Be versatile. Be brutal. Think about how you can add an accessory to take your look from day to night. A scarf, or a pair of wedges for night use, and take a crossbody that can be used during the day but then be transformed into a stylish clutch by night. Need some tips? Here is the fashion bible to get you started, just don’t start packing all those items you’ve never worn thinking this will be the time….we promise it wont be. Accessories (and we don’t mean earrings)
Lose that heavy book (you don’t need it – take a kindle!) and replace with these 5 must have items to take with you:
- Luggage scales – so you know if you can fit in a dozen pairs of shoes without paying excess baggage on the flight home.
- Powerboard for all your gadgets and even better take a universal power adaptor too!
- Mini toiletries! You don’t need to take huge bottles, downsize girl!
- Collapsible water bottle – to reuse wherever you go and saves $ not to mention plastic on having to take water bottles with you wherever you go.
- Waistbags, bumbags, whatever you want to call them – they are in! Fashionably in! Wear around your waist, look stylish and have more hands for shopping! (um, we mean sightseeing).
The Shoe to get you through
We all love to look the part, but practicality is a must when travelling. You can still look stylish, but you don’t want to be confined to bed rest because those gorgeous shoes have now peeled off layers of skin.
So, consider pair of sneakers that can transform from day to night. We love these from Jo Mercer
