Top places in CBR for a first date

Let’s be upfront, I haven’t been on a first date in almost six years; in those years Canberra’s landscape dramatically changed and I often wonder what we might’ve done instead of bypassing Macca’s before just making a screening of Iron Man 3.

But, with Valentines Day literally at the end of the week we thought we would talk first dates

First dates are awkward. You’re with someone you barely know trying to make small talk. Canberra has heaps of variety and many hidden gems so opportunities are almost endless! But with endless opportunity, what do you do? We’re here to help! We’ve compiled a list of what Canberra’s got on offer for a first date.

  • Something fun

If you’ve got a competitive side, compete at glow-in-the-dark mini golf  Pitch and Putt Canberra and top it off with lunch on a Go Boat cruise or test their intelligence at an Escape Room. There’s one in Mitchell, Phillip and the City.

  • Something intimate

Cosy up at local speakeasy gem Molly. 50’s jazz vibes and mood lighting, it’s the perfect place to kick back and get to know someone. Other options include Highball, High-Jinks or Monster Bar and Kitchen (and why not catch a movie at Palace Electric while you’re there?).

You’ve also got the National Gallery of Australia and the National Portrait Gallery for something quieter and a short distance away is the National Film and Sound Archive (take a ghost tour of the basement) or the National Museum close by.

  • Something for the foodie

Check out some cult favourites like Akiba, Lazy Su, Bentspoke or Grease Monkey or visit up-and-comers as you take a walk along the foreshore or Lonsdale street.

If coffee is more your thing, choice places include Double Shot, the Cupping Room or High Road

  • Something seasonal

Pending what time of year you and your new beau are hanging out, sample the local delights of the world Canberra at the Multicultural Festival, hang out at the Craft Beer and Cider festival, test your skill at the Actew AGL Royal Canberra Show, fill your belly with noodles at Enlighten, explore the National Folk Festival or stroll through Floriade at day and night.

Have fun ladies, enjoy the experience of getting to know someone new. Just remember, sometimes you gotta go through a few toads before you find the prince.
