Canberra Girls Guide to the Central Coast

Dreaming of a weekend escape for you and your girls but you’ve been to the South Coast a zillion times? Pack your besties and head north to the bliss of the Central Coast – an easy 4 hour drive north of Canberra.

The weather is balmy, the locals relaxed  and best of all for adventures it’s only an hours adventure to the wine region of the Hunter Valley (say no more when are we going?) and to Newcastle itself.

We’ve provided our top picks on where to stay, where to eat, and what you can do to fill your days (aside from the lazy beach days that are non negotiable on girls trips).

Long Jetty is an urban/hipster neighbourhood with a stack of trendy fashion stores and places for yoga fanatics or acai bowl addicts.

Glass Onion Society is THE place for your breakfast/bunch and we recommend the Aruba Smoothie and Triple Threat Felafel.

Across the road is The Savoy, the newest sibling to the area which is an old Cinema converted into an upscale bar. Nibble on a cheese platter with your favourite cocktail whilst listening to some tunes spun by DJs come the weekends, or mid week, head upstairs into the old school cinema and watch all your favourite 80’s flicks. Whose not a fan of Dirty Dancing? I dare you.

For some sun and surf, Avoca Surf House is our pick for an Aperol Spritz with the waves crashing underneath your feet. It’s the playground of the Sydney crew who favour this area for their weekends so you’ll be sure to see some famous faces amongst the crowds.

Terrigal is where all the cool kids hang and the nightlife is next level come the weekends. Mumbo Jumbos, Joker and the Thief and Pocket Bar are all favourites with a large array of cocktails and canapés with charismatic staff and cool tunes.

If you’re wanting to feel and literally be fancy, then Bells at Kilcare is the ultimate luxury in a girls weekend – you can stay there – or head there for an afternoon cocktail and bite to eat.  Even boasting a super cute pool bar.

Otherwise hire an amazing Airbnb on the beach, or stay in Terrigal at Star of the Seas.  How awful to wake up to this kind of view, right?

If you’re on a budget, then hire a Cabin at any of the Caravan Parks with onsite cabins – and they are literally right on the beach. Blue Lagoon Beach Resort in Bateau Bay, Toowoon Bay, Umina Beach or Shelly Beach just to name a few.

Catch the local Ferry at Ettalong which leaves every hour and in a short 20 mins, you’ve arrived at Palm Beach (yes it’s that beach for you Home and Away Fans).  Stroll the shops, eat to your hearts content at The Boathouse, Jonahs or Barrenjoey House before returning via the Ferry and catching the afternoon sunset from The Box on the Water in Ettalong. (secret – you can see the holiday home that Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman used to have).

For the lovers of the outdoors, pack your runners and active wear and head to Bouddi National Parkfor some walking trails, nature and stunning beaches. Somersby Falls has some stunning scenery also. Pick a picnic and enjoy this view! Not bad huh!

We can’t possibly leave out a visit to Wine Country now can we?

We know Canberra wines are sensational, but head up to the Hunter for a fun day. Our biggest tip is to check the calendar of events for what’s on as big name acts often visit this area and can be super busy at the wineries that they perform at.

Visiting the Hunter Valley is the ultimate in a girls day out if you’re thinking of heading in winter. (remember the Central Coast winter is not the Canberra winter – no female owns a wool coat on the Coast!).
