Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into the industry/field?
Well, there are actually 3 of us! We are sisters, Stephanie, Briana and Ashleigh the owners of the newly founded business The Mini Cake Club. We live just across the border on a property in NSW and have grown up in and around Canberra. We love DIYing and being creative in our spare time and we certainly love a challenge. When we saw mini cakes trending throughout the world we were instantly inspired to bring them to Canberra. We are excited to have introduced our unique spin on the cakes and created a new custom gifting experience for people.
Can you walk us through the background of where the passion comes from?
We have always loved baking and making our family feel special with thoughtful and yummy home baked goods, especially cakes. We had never imagined turning it into a business until we were able to pause and reflect during the recent Covid lockdowns. Unfortunately, life hasn’t been the kindest to our family recently, losing our Dad to cancer in January meant gaining a new-founded perspective on life. As cliché as it sounds life really is short. Knowing your world can be turned upside down at any moment has been our greatest motivation to find our passion and take more risks in the hopes of finding greater happiness.
What was the most challenging aspect you’ve faced so far?
Switching off! We have so many ideas for The Mini Cake Club but there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to get through everything. We have spent countless nights brainstorming into the early morning hours. Balancing this with full time jobs and kids has been….well a recipe for some seriously sleep deprived people. In close second would be social media, we don’t actively use our personal social media so this has been a steep learning curve for us, thankfully with 3 of us to manage it and advice from friends it hasn’t been too overwhelming.
And what’s been the most amazing experience?
Seeing our vision come to life! Although we are just in the early stages of starting our business, seeing the progress we have made in just over a month has been incredible. We had set some goals at the beginning of our launch to achieve by early next year and have already achieved them within a few weeks. We are so grateful to all of the love and support we have received.
What’s the biggest piece of advice you have for someone looking to chase their dreams/passion or try something new?
We have always talked about new ideas and opportunities for businesses but have struggled to take that first step to executing them! Our advice is to just take that first baby step to bring your idea to life. Register the business, start your social media page whatever you need to do to hold yourself accountable. Just go for! We completely understand the fear of failure or judgement from others but pushing past those fears and diving head first into it all was the best decision we have made!
What does an ideal day look like to you?
A little sleep in, English breakfast tea in the morning sun and ticking off the whole to do list for the day!
What keeps you Zen/Happy
An ocean swim! We love to take any opportunity we can to head to the beach.
